Panel Sizes

Panel sizing drives the entire look: traditional, modern, busy, or calm. Use these ranges as a starting point, then test with the calculator.

Common panel widths

  • 12–18": classic, traditional, more detailed
  • 18–24": balanced, versatile, works almost anywhere
  • 24–30"+: modern, fewer panels, cleaner look

Wainscoting heights (rule-of-thumb)

  • 32–36": traditional dining/hall wainscot
  • 40–48": modern / taller “chair rail” look
  • 54"+: dramatic and architectural (best with higher ceilings)

If you’re unsure, pick a height that aligns with a natural visual break: window sills, door casing lines, or furniture height.

Spacing consistency

When paneling wraps corners or continues into another wall, consistency matters more than “perfect math.” It’s usually better to slightly adjust panel width than to break the rhythm.
